Age Concern is Big Lottery Funded across South East England for the “fit as a fiddle” programme designed to help older people to live healthier, more active and fulfilling lives. The programme will deliver a range of courses to older people in physical activity, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. For each new activity, “fit as a fiddle” will support an active network, generally the first eight sessions for a minimum of 12 people. The participants can therefore try out something new, entirely free, for eight sessions.
To deliver innovative, enjoyable and sustainable projects, to encourage older people of all ages to try something new in relation to physical activity, healthy eating and mental wellbeing, and to empower older people to live active and fulfilling lives with the support of peers, carers, families and local communities.
“fit as a fiddle” will consider supporting any form of indoor or outdoor exercise, or healthy eating activity that can be sustained at an affordable cost.
Key to the success of this programme are volunteers who are involved in the planning of the activities from the beginning. Volunteers are helpful in recruiting the participants and building a relationship with them prior to the sessions starting, coordinating transportation and logistics, setting up the room, taking the registers, and promoting a healthy lifestyle in general. They also offer signposting help to other forms of suitable exercise already established in the community.
